Appeal to Egyptian Counsels for Liberties to Establish a Front Defending the Upcoming April 6 Demonstrations

Considering it as spark lit in a dark tunnel, the opposition political forces and actors have received the April 6, 2008 strike action called by Al Mahala workers with euphoria. They found it a suitable occasion to express their anger and discontent on the one hand, and to express their solidarity with Egypt's workers represented in Al Mahala workers on the other. Not only had the opposition forces received the appeal as a favorable opportunity, but also some Internet forums have received about 70,000 subscribers who declared their intention to participate in the general strike. Combating the idea of general strike, some other Internet forums have declared not only their rejection but also threatened the would-be strikers of losing their jobs.
To abort the strike, the government-controlled trade union had summoned the leading workers and tried to pressure them for signing a paper against the strike. Simultaneously, a number of statements have been distributed in Al Mahala plant confirming the strike's date. In other work locations, the appeal received many solidarity letters from many different governorates.
Due to the danger surrounding the April 6, 2008 strike action and the security measures, which could be preemptive measures or tough crackdowns and violent confrontations, the undersigned organizations have decided to create a legal front defending the would-be demonstrators in case of arresting them. We call on all Egyptian Counsels for Liberties to join the Front, which so far includes about 120 lawyers of Greater Mahala. The Front, based in the Hisham Mubarak Law Center, appeals all Egyptians to call the Front in case one of them or their relatives or acquaintances was arrested.
