Charging Mahalla Workers With Incitement

The Minister of Interior has once again ordered the Sinai activist and novelist Mosaad Abu Fagr to be detained in Borg al Arab jail.  Abu Fagr was arrested after the eruption of demonstrations in Rafah city in protest against the Egyptian government that tried to take over the houses of the Egyptian citizens living in the city. The Public Prosecutor's Office charged Abu Fagr, among others, with inciting the riot actions in addition to resisting authorities and assaulting civil servants on duty. By the way, the court overruled the first detention decision issued by the Minister of Interior. Waiting for extending the state of emergency, Abu Fagr was kept in Arish custody for 15 days and then transferred to Borg al Arab under the emergency law to be the first victim of the 27-year-old state of emergency in its new version.
On another context, Mahalla prosecutor office released the labor leader Wael Habib who was interrogated yesterday. This was a part of the interrogations decided for a report filed by a foreman who accused Habib along with Gamal Abu Isaad, Mustafa Fouda, Gihad Taman, Kareem al Bohiri, Kamal al Fayomi of inciting workers to go on strike action. The report which was filed on April 5, 2008 has been reviewed at the same day by hearing the complainant's statements and by interrogating workers only yesterday. While The statements of Abu Isaad will be heard tomorrow, the statements of Fouda and Taman are to be heard the next week.
On the other hand, a court session is to be held on June 2, 2008 for reviewing the complaints lodged by the front for overruling the detention order issued against Kareem al Bohiri, Tareq Amin and Kamal al Faiomi. While the first circuit was determined for reviewing the complaint of Al Bohiri and Al Faiomi, the ninth circuit was for Amin.
Al Mahalla court turned down the complaint submitted by 42 detainees who were remanded into custody for 15 days and to be ended on June 6.
Borg al Arab's preventive custody administration has decided to change the status of Mohammad Saleh, translator, from criminal to political detainee after going on a hunger strike from 24 to 28 May. So, he joined Mahalla workers in the political prisoners' ward.
